Happy Birthday Cora !!

Whenever I have a long post ahead of me I get writer's block then I have a whole load of posts that pile up. So finally I'm writing Cora's birth story. At about six in the morning on the December 31, 2004 I woke up with contractions. I had so much false labor in the previous weeks that I didn't think anything of it. Besides, Emmett was eight days late and today was only my due date. Plus we had bought tickets to First Night Fort Collins that evening. I laid there trying to go back to sleep, but at about seven got up. Dan and Emmett were still sleeping so I putzed around until about 7:30 when Emmett woke up. I decided that I must be in labor as the contractions were about five minutes apart, although freakishly short at 20 seconds. What! In labor on my due date?! On New Years Eve!! But I have plans!! I got into the shower while Dan gave Emmett breakfast. At about 8:15 Dan comes up to our bathroom. He is getting concerned that the contractions are 4 minutes apart. I told him I was fine and just wanted to stay in the shower, and besides the contractions are only 30 seconds long, even if they were very intense. Not taking MY word for it, he calls the Birthing Center to ask them what they thought. They said come in. And my doctor was actually on the unit so he would wait for me to show up. Fine, great, whatever.... I'll get out of my nice shower and go out into the cold to get my cervix checked. Sounds like a good time to me. Dan called our friend Christine to come over and watch Emmett. I was getting dressed and have to kneel with contractions. I must be very vocal with contractions as her eyes were huge and she hurried us out of the house.
At the hospital, around 9 , I was so bummed that I was coming on during day shift and didn't know anybody. However our nurse Jen was super sweet. Dr Schmidt checked my cervix and I was 4 cm. What!?! Only four!?! I got out of my shower for this?! I wanted to go back home but Dr. Schmidt said he wasn't OK with it as my cervix was stretchy and I could go fast. He offered to break my amniotic sac to speed things up but I declined. I wasn't comfortable being put on the 24 hour time limit. So Jen filled up the jacuzzi as an incentive and I got in. I spent the next hour or so in the glorious jacuzzi. I think my vocalness was freaking Jen out as she kept coming in to ask me if I needed anything (like an epidural). I told her the contractions were strong, but short and manageable. At about 10:30 I got out of the tub and she checked my cervix. 8 cm! Yeah! I wanted to use the birth ball, so while Jen got it for me I rocked at the side of the bed. I was having some back pain so Dan was applying counter-pressure and I decided to wait on the ball. Jen kept asking me if I needed to push. I was getting a bit snappy with the questions so I told her I would tell her when I was ready. She laid out chux under me (as if I would deliver my baby on the floor!) and went to call Dr. Schmidt. At about 11 I needed to push so I climbed into bed. Jen said I shouldn't push as Dr. Schmidt wasn't there yet. Ha!! Whatever!! Luckily he came through the door with my first push. At the first push, I felt panicked - the baby didn't move down. I tried again - and still nothing. Thank heavens Dr. Schmidt decided to rupture my amniotic sack. With the gush of fluid, the baby moved down. Panic was replaced by the thought that not getting the epidural was a very bad idea. Jenn was telling me to breathe slower and Dr. Schmidt was telling me to push slower and Dan was telling me to breathe deeper and I was thinking "F*** you all, you do it then!". So on the fourth push, Cora Lynn was born at 11:11 am, 7 pound 2 ounces. When they said it was a girl I was so surprised and thrilled. I had assumed it was another boy, since I already knew how to make one of those. She didn't need any oxygen so I could hold her right away. Unfortunately, there was some concern about me bleeding, so with the extra pit in my IV, I was in so much pain I gave her to Dan. The pit was way worse than labor.

So my beautiful little girl turns 4 today. She choose mac and cheese, applesauce and chocolate pudding for her birthday dinner. Comfort food all the way! We went to First Night Fort Collins and watched a magic show, ballerinas, cloggers, a brass band and saw the fireworks. She thinks every year she gets fireworks for her birthday.

Christmas Afternoon

After the present frenzy the family took a walk. The weather was wonderful; sunny a just a bit nippy. We walked down to the neighborhood pond where the kiddos (and Grandpa Brown) played that the cattails were "magic wands that pouffed".
Cora and Thatcher got rides from Dad and Grandpa Brown.
Emmett carried his trusty light saber, ready to do battle at a moments notice.
After the walk Dan and I put the kiddos down for a nap and we worked on dinner. Dan Seasoned up the ginormous turkey grown by a local farmer. 29 pounds!! It barely fit in the oven. We also had squash from the garden, green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy and fresh bread. Then for dessert we had homemade chocolate pudding. Thatcher thought this was the best part of the dinner!

Christmas Morning

The kids woke up early (7:30 instead of 8, sick I know). I could hear Emmett yawn and stretch and the first words out of his mouth was "Christmas". Within 2 minutes both of them were up and in our room. With all of the commotion Thatcher soon was awake. I threw a strata in the oven and as soon as the grandparents got here there was a flurry of paper-ripping. Thatcher opened two gifts then soon lost interest and then spent as much of his energy as possible getting in the the other kids piles of tempting toys. After the frenzy was over, Emmett sighed and said all of his wishes had come true! Cora couldn't decide which project to start first. All in all so much better than last year when everyone was in tears by the end. I think younger kids get so overwhelmed by the excitement.

Helping Mop

The mop is twice as tall as she is but that didn't stop her from helping!

Presents

This year I decided that Emmett and Cora needed to buy presents for each other. One more way to teach them that this time of year is about giving and not receiving. Plus they could learn how put themself in another persons' place and think about what they might want. So I gave them ten dollars each and Dan took Emmett and I took Cora to the Great Satan; Toy R Us.

Truly, I was so proud about how they both looked only for each other, no saying I want this, or maybe Emmett would like a Tinkerbell dress-up dress. Cora picked out a light saber for Emmett and Emmett picked out a pink Hello Kitty Cell phone and Tinkerbell stickers for Cora. Then they wrapped the gifts themselves, tags and all. (I did tie some bows.)

Pumpkin Cookies

Wow !! This is the best cookie recipe ever! I know it looks a bit weird but trust me. I found it online then decreased the sugar and as always sneaked some whole wheat flour in. We ate them so fast I couldn't take pictures.

Pumpkin Cookies Recipe

1 cup butter, room temperature
1 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup pumpkin puree
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 1/3 cups quick or old-fashioned oats
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup of pumpkin seeds
1 cup dried currants

1 Preheat the oven to 350° F.
2 Beat the butter and sugars together until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
3 Add the egg, vanilla, and pumpkin puree and beat for another 3 minutes.
4 In a separate bowl combine the flour, oats, baking soda, salt, cardamom and cinnamon and whisk together. Slowly add it to the butter mixture until just combined, being sure to scrape down the sides and bottom once or twice to ensure even mixing.
5 Fold in the pumpkin seeds and currants. Drop spoonfuls of dough on cookie sheets. Bake for 10-13 minutes. Allow to cool on the tray for a minute or two to set, then move to a wire rack to finish cooling.
Makes 4 dozen cookies.

Last Dance Class

Cora's dance teacher Miss Marsha rules with an iron fist so I wasn't able to get any pctures during the class, but afterwards I got a few. Miss Marsha said that Cora is doing very well and is a born leader. Miss Marsha also commented on what a great dad Dan was. How funny - she's only met him twice. He must just exude it!

Homeschooling Evaluation

Well, it's the end of our first semester of homeschooling. Emmett has officially finished all of his 1st grade coursework and the 2nd grade is in mail to us. It blows my mind that he is (so far) 1 1/2 years ahead. It seems like the more I put on his plate, the faster he learns. And more astonishingly is how fast Cora learned how to read. She is now reading all of the 1st grade materials that Emmett just finished with! I've started telling people that they shouldn't ask about my kids because I just start to glow and can't stop gushing about them...

Some things I wish I had known before I started homeschooling...
- it is way more fun than I thought it would be.
-put more thought into my location of books, printer, computer, tables to maximize my efficiency. No fun to be constantly running up and down the stairs.
-have "lessons" prepared for Cora so she feels like she gets to have some of the fun, too.
-it's OK to go out of order or skip the busy work or to not do any work on some of the days.
-people think you are uber-weird if you say you homeschool your kids.
-keep some "bait" (new books, science lessons) to get through the lessons that he is balking at.
-they're capable of so much more than we give them credit for.

Perfect Day For Cookies

It was frigid outside, so the kiddos and I decided cookies were in order. We tried this new recipe. Awesome!! Tangy, tart and sweet. Just perfect. The kids loved rolling the balls in the sugar.

Lemon Poppy Seed Cookies

1/2 cup fresh lemon juice (2 to 3 lemons)
3.5 teaspoons lemon zest
8 ounces unsalted butter
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1.5 cups sugar
1 large egg
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 tablespoon poppy seeds

Preheat oven to 375F . Bring lemon juice to a simmer in a saucepan until it is reduced by about half. Add half the butter until melted. Remove from heat. Sift flour, baking powder and salt together in a bowl. Cream remaining butter and 1 cup of sugar together. Add egg and lemon/butter mixture. Mix with an electric beater until pale, only a couple of minutes. Add vanilla and 2 teaspoons of the zest. Add flour and poppy seeds. If still sticky add a bit more flour. Add together remaining 1/2 cup of sugar and lemon zest in a separate bowl. Roll your cookie dough into small balls and roll them in the lemon sugar. Place on a non-stick baking sheet a couple of inches apart and press down with the flat end of a glass. Bake between 10 and 11 minutes, until browned around the edges.

Holly Choir

Emmett and Cora are in the little kids Holly Choir at our church this year. The kiddos meet once a week for 6 weeks and practice a few Christmas songs to sing for the congregation, at a nursing home, then at the Christmas Eve service. They were so cute!! I took a million pictures and some video. And of course I was so overwhelmed with motherly pride that I could barely watch without crying. Until, of course, after the first song, in the two seconds of perfect silence before the next song, I hear Emmett's voice ringing out clearly. "Why are all of those people flashing lights at us?"

Bunny Art

Cora drew some pictures of bunnies, or should I say rabbits with large claws today. Hmmm....
